Recruitment should be SIMPLE: a business needs talent, candidates apply, interviews happen, and the right person gets hired.
Reality looks a little different.
Somewhere between “We’re looking for the best candidate” and “Welcome aboard,” there’s a long list of creative excuses that leave both job seekers and business owners scratching their heads.
💼 If you’ve APPLIED FOR A JOB, you’ve probably heard these gems:
🔹 “We’ll keep your resume on file.” (A mythical place where resumes go to be forgotten 🗑️.)
🔹 “The role has been put on hold.” (Translation: We are testing the market, but we couldn’t just say that.)
🔹 “You’re overqualified.” (Translation: We actually don’t want you taking your boss’s job)
🔹 “We’ll get back to you.” (At this point, even a snail is faster.)
🏢 And for BUSINESS OWNERS hiring, the recruiter excuses aren’t much better:
🔸 “We’re still shortlisting.” (Are they finding people or conducting a scientific study?)
🔸 “The perfect candidate just dropped out.” (The perfect one? It’s unfortunate that’s the 3rd.)
🔸 “Let’s sign a retainer first.” (Sure, and in return, we’ll provide… patience 🕰️.)
🔸 “They received another offer.” (Well, that’s what happens when hiring drags on forever.)
Now, let’s be clear – great recruiters exist, and they help businesses grow, but sometimes, the process feels more like a mystery novel than a hiring strategy.
What’s the most ridiculous excuse you’ve heard in recruitment?
